Typical elements that define rock drumming are a nice, consistent 2 and 4 back beat on the snare drum, slightly open hi hats and a full bodied heel up kick on the bass drum.
The reality is, rock is very diverse. Once you start dipping your toes into the wonderful world of rock drumming you will see that there are no rules.
