Cruise Ship Drumming
Life as a Show Band Drummer.
Between October 2014 and February 2015 i did a contract with Carnival Cruise Lines as a Show Band Drummer. The ship (Carnival Magic) was based in Galveston, Texas and did week long trips through the Caribbean. This was a great experience. Playing drums every night in a variety of situations, making lot’s of friends and getting to see some different parts of the world.
Sight reading was a key part of this gig, as was playing different styles.
We would play 4 different production shows a week, all with backing and click tracks. We did 3 themed ‘Live Sets’ a week (no backing or clicks), ‘Motown’, ‘Funk & Disco’ and ’80’s’.
The rhythm section would have 2 sessions of ‘Super Star Live’ a week, which is essentially Karaoke with a live band. There are also situations that call for World music styles like playing second line or various Latin grooves.
I have broken down my experiences into 7 parts. Check out my blog for more details!
